Historical timeline

The company “LUKA” ZADAR was founded on January 1, 1953. year. The main activity of the future port developed from the transport and shipping company “Transport” Zadar.

Until 1967, the company did not expand its activities, it remained a company with limited capacity and no major importance. Since 1967, with the construction of the Zadar – Knin railway, the basic activity of the future port of Zadar began. From then until today, the development of the company can be divided into three basic phases.

The first phase (lasting until 1970) is the construction of the new port “Gaženica”, the second phase /1970-1979/ is the rapid development and increase in traffic, the third phase /1979 – until today/ is the specialization of the Company. From 1970 to 1990, the Port of Zadar recorded a rapid development, an increase in traffic and the construction of infrastructure and superstructure, and especially with the arrival of the new highway and the reconstruction of the railway lines, the Port of Zadar is expecting a new cycle of development.

The city of Zadar has been a maritime and port city throughout its history. Historical data shows that Zadar is a transit port for the export of livestock from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in 1711, 10,148 head were exported to Venice. With the development of trade, salt, fish and wood were exported so that, for example, port traffic in 1929 amounted to 31,700 tons.

After the Second World War, on July 1, 1945, the maritime administration was founded in Zadar with 50 port workers, and in 1948 it changed its name to “Obalac” port transport company. On January 1, 1953, the company “Transport” was founded, and that date marks the beginning of today’s trading company Luka Zadar d.d. Zadar.
